Toilet training is a significant milestone in your child’s development, and it doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. We’ve teamed up with Alex and Bel, paediatric Occupational Therapists and co-founders of The Independence Hub, to bring you expert advice, practical strategies, and essential tools for successful toilet training.
Q&A with Alex and Bel
Tell us a little bit about who you both are and how The Independence Hub came about.
Alex and Bel are two paediatric Occupational Therapists and co-founders of The Independence Hub. This unique business began after they saw the benefit of photo-personalised toilet stories when supporting hundreds of children with toilet training- and their own! They wanted to make these powerful resources available for everyone and created an online platform where parents can easily make their child an e-book and animated video which has been personalised with their child's photo.
When should parents start toilet training?
Great question! Getting started can sometimes feel overwhelming so we always talk with families about a “preparation” phase.
First, we want children to feel safe when sitting on the toilet. Having either a potty or a secure toilet insert seat (no big hole to fall into the toilet!) and steps so their feet are flat and supported, helps with this sense of safety.
Next, we want to support your child to understand this toileting thing!
- Let them watch you use the toilet: This helps them get the hang of the process and the steps involved.
- Practice sitting on the toilet: Allow your child to build confidence by practicing sitting on the toilet with no expectation to wee or poo. Schedule these every few hours or whenever you notice their ‘wiggle!’.
- Books and videos: Read books and watch videos about the toilet. We know how important this step is which is why we’ve created our products! Create your own beautiful, personalised resources for your child here
- Help your child notice their body. Label their body parts using correct terms and help them understand what these parts do in relation to the toilet. We can also start to bring attention to signs we see that they are doing a wee or poo. “I can see you standing very still. Is a wee coming out?” or “It looks like you are pushing out a poop”
- Involve your child with choosing their underwear. Children love to be involved and this helps to create a sense of interest in this new skill.
- Resolve any constipation. Ensure your child is eating plenty of fibre and drinking lots of water, to keep their poos soft and regular. This helps to prevent constipation which can impact on toilet training. Always consult your local health care provider if you have concerns with constipation prior to starting toilet training, or during if you are concerned.
Remember, accidents will happen! Try to stay calm and remind your child gently that wees/poos go in the toilet. Help them clean up and finish the remaining steps, e.g. flush toilet, wash hands.
